We had the extreme pleasure of being at the media day at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney today to see the debut of Holden’s new 4×4 off roader the Colorado 7 we were that impressed that it went straight to the top of the list of cars we want to review.
Due to go on sale in late December the Colorado 7 gives Holden a serious 4X4 something it hasn’t had since the demised of the Jackaroo.
The Colorado 7 is built off the same platform as the Colorado Ute so you know it will impressive diesel powered performance something that us here at 3 on The Tree really excited. Not only is going to have the performance but it will have a superb off road capability as well from the chassis configuration designed specifically for the SUV.
The Colorado 7 as the name suggests seats 7 and offers a considerate amount of cargo space which gives you the ability to take the whole family off road at any time in comfort.
The Colorado 7 will be available in two specifications, the well-equipped entry level LT and top-spec LTZ.
The Colorado 7 has received a 5-star ANCAP safety rating as you would expect from a vehicle with list of safety features as long as your arm including Electronic Stability Control, dual front airbags and full-length curtain airbags that extend to the third row as standard fit.
The Colorado 7 will only be available with one engine and transmission combination but it’s the same awesome combination available on the Colorado Ute the 2.8L Duramax diesel engine rated at 132 kW power and 470 Nm of torque backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission.
While the platform might very similar to the the Colorado ute, where they vary is in chassis engineering with the Colorado 7’s chassis engineered independently of the Colorado Ute and is aimed towards passenger comfort. While both models share an independent double wishbone front suspension set up, Colorado 7 features a five-link live axle rear suspension configuration that’s unique to the SUV and coil springs front and rear.
The Colorado 7’s off road ability is due to a part time four wheel drive system with transfer case, with low and high ratio gears, shift on the fly and Limited Slip Differential, Hill Descent Control which enhances the 4X4 capability of the Colorado 7.
On the inside the Colorado 7’ offers spacious layout which not only will seat up to 7 in comfort, but when needed offers a huge 1830 litres of cargo with the second and third row seats folded.
Holden Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales John Elsworth said the Colorado 7 was the first of two new SUVs Holden will introduce in the next 12 months.
“The SUV market is booming right now, and the Colorado 7 gives us another solid opportunity to tap into this fast-growing area of the market,” he said.
“Colorado 7 is the first true heavy duty off-roader to wear a Holden badge in around 10 years and matches the Colorado for genuine buyer appeal, bold design and advanced diesel engine technology.
“Colorado 7 is a true seven-seat, full-size 4X4, which is ideal for customers shopping for an SUV that can take them off the beaten track and still carry the family and haul cargo at the weekend.”
“It was designed to stand side-by-side with the Colorado LCV at the Holden dealership, and will complement our Captiva range by offering a serious alternative.
“And with gutsy performance from our proven Duramax 2.8 diesel engine, Colorado 7 is set to become the toughest Holden off-roader we’ve sold to date.”
Powertrain and performance
Colorado 7 is powered by the same Duramax in-line four-cylinder 2.8-litre diesel engine first seen in the Colorado LCV range. It delivers peak torque of 470 Nm and 132 kW of power.
The high-tech diesel engine is designed to achieve a balance of load-carrying performance and fuel economy and returns 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres and 252 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
Colorado 7 has an impressive 3,000kg towing capacity thanks to the torque and strength from its diesel powertrain, 6-speed automatic transmission and robust driveline.
Colorado 7’s stable footprint is courtesy of front independent double wishbone suspension and independent five-link rear suspension configuration with coil springs at all four wheels.
The five-link rear suspension has been engineered to provide greater stability and surefooted performance, particularly when towing. Its design enables a smoother towing experience and minimises trailer snaking and lateral movement.
