As the the Title would suggest the last ever VE Commodore to be built has rolled off the production line at Holden’s South Australian Elizabeth plant, the SS Z Series sedan was painted in “Chlorophyll the VE Commodore first rolled off the production line in 2006 since that time over 520,000 VE Commodores were built. The final example of the VE Commodore – recently named by Wheels Magazine as the “the best Australian car ever” – has rolled off the line at Holden Vehicle Operations in South Australia.

This last VE built was an SS Z Series automatic sedan model, painted in ‘Chlorophyll’. 

Sold on six continents and registering production numbers exceeding 520,000 for both local and global markets during its lifecycle, the VE Commodore and its variants have cemented a place in Australia’s motoring hall of fame.    

As Holden looks forward to the imminent launch of the new VF Commodore, the VE stands tall as a landmark in Holden’s – and Australia’s – motoring history. Designed essentially from a blank piece of paper, the VE was the “most Australian Commodore” Holden had ever built when it launched in 2006. A rolling showcase for the design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities of Holden, the VE and its variants were eventually sold on six different continents, predominantly under the Chevrolet nameplate: from Utes in South Africa and sedans in the Middle East and Brazil to long-wheelbase PPV police vehicles in the United States.

The VE also earned a cult following in the United States as the Pontiac G8 and in the UK, where Holden Special Vehicles iterations of the VE were sold as the Vauxhall VXR8.

The world’s motoring media duly recognised the VE’s winning combination of style, quality and world-class driving dynamics as the VE claimed a swag of Australian and international accolades, including:

The excellence of the VE and Holden’s engineering team was also well recognised within GM globally, with the VE’s vehicle architecture forming the basis of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro and much of the development work on the modern day American muscle car was done in Australia by Holden engineers. 

Fittingly, the final VE to be built represents an icon of Holden performance – an SS Z Series, painted in Chlorophyll.

The VE Commodore also stands as the most successful race car model in Australian motorsport history. After winning on debut at the Clipsal 500 in 2007, the VE went on to win an unrivalled 103 championship series races, three V8 Supercar titles and remains the only model to have won at Bathurst four times in a row.   

“The VE Commodore was a landmark achievement for Holden. The company’s first ‘clean-sheet’ design allowed our team to show the world what Holden was capable of and the result was, and remains, a stunning car,” said Holden Executive Director – Manufacturing, Richard Phillips.

“It’s a bittersweet moment to be marking the end of VE production. It’s been such a great product for us and there’s so much pride around the VE here in the plant, but at the same time we’re excited about the future and the entire Holden team is energised by the imminent launch of the fantastic new VF Commodore,”  

“The VF is the most advanced car ever created in this country, a car that takes the winning values and trademark driving dynamics of the VE and elevates it to a new level of luxury, technology and sophistication,” said Mr Phillips.

The Commodore is Holden’s longest-standing and most successful nameplate. First introduced in 1978, the Commodore name will have graced 15 model series when the VF Commodore goes on sale in June.

Almost 3 million Commodores have been produced since 1978 when the first VB series sedans rolled off the Holden production line.

The VE Commodore makes way for the forth coming VF Commodore which brings a whole lot of new technology, safety features and the first time aluminium will be used in the production of an Australian made car.
