Now if you are familiar with my reviews then you would be familiar with how much I love the Hyundai Veloster it’s no big secret that out of all the cars I have test driven and reviewed. For some reason the Veloster has tweaked my joy metre enough to be the one I would actually buy.
So I will admit that my excitement levels were extremely when I was given the chance the review the latest special edition Street model.
With my first impressions I knew I was going to have a good week, now I really like the looks of the Velosters coupe shape and it’s quirky three door setup.
The street edition though comes with a few unique outside features including Phantom Black body side skirt, front spoiler and rear diffuser inserts, grille surround, side mirror covers, rear roof spoiler, semi gloss black finished 18inch RAYS Gram Lights alloy wheels. The Street Edition is finished in unique metallic blue called Dazzling Blue Mica paint which just completes what in my opinion is a wonderful looking car.
I lost count of how many times people told me how good the colour looked and amount of pictures people took of the car it created a lot of looks everywhere I went.
With blue bolsters and blue contrast stitching to the leather appointed heated & ventilated front sports bucket seats with, blue front seatbelts.
Blue front door grip handles, centre console side garnishes and blue contrast stitching on the door armrests, centre console armrest, steering wheel and manual gear lever boot.
The Street Edition not only looks good on the outside but it looks great on the inside as well.
The leather clad front pews are not only comfortable but hugely supportive which is good because the Veloster likes to corner, the steering wheel is the perfect thickness comfortable to hold has contains buttons for the cruise, audio, phone and trip so it means you don’t have to take hands off the wheel.
The instrument panel is well set out and easy to read most of time read there was a few times where reflections made it a touch harder to see this where the lack of digital speedo really makes itself known and really the only thing I dont like about the instruments.
In the middle of the shapely dash in the 7inch touch screen for the multimedia system which is not only one of the easiest systems to connect your hone to, but it’s extremely easy to use as well. It has full bluetooth connectivity which worked awesome and still meant I could listen to Sportify despite not having the app inbuilt into the system. The satnav which has live traffic updates is not only extremely easy to use but works brilliantly.
Hyundai have done the smart move of making it a 4 seater instead of trying to fit in 3 seats across the back so rear seat passengers get a console inbetween the rear seats. As you would expect being coupe the sloping roof line means that head room could be an issue for real tall people, the rear door on the passenger side does make entry easier for rear passengers but it does also mean that anyone sitting behind the driver has climb over the console but they can also get in from the right side. Boot space is reasonable as well at .
On the road the Veloster is a dream to drive has benefited from Hyundai’s local suspension tuning program, while it’s still not the sharpest steering car I’ve driven but it benefits from Hyundai’s 3 Mode Flex Steer system which offers Normal, Sport & Comfort allowing you to tailor the steering to suit your mood.
The steering is well weighted and offers decent so you know it’s going to go where you point it.
Throw it at some corners and the Veloster loves to corner and it sits nice and flat and didn’t seem to be upset by any mid corner bumps, the ride is a little on the firm side as you would expect which why it is so much fun to drive, however you do feel some of the imperfections and bumps on the road but there no bang or crash transmitting into the cabin.
The 1.6L turbo engine pushing out 150kW and 320Nm is very tractable and is equally suited to putting along in peak hour traffic and the open road, economy wasn’t bad I averaged 9.9L/100km for my commute for the week and it gone down to the 6’s on the open road. Mated to the 1.6L turbo engine is a slick 6 speed manual transmission which shifted smoothly and the clutch action is light while offering a good amount of feel, I do really love the pedal positioning I have dodgy ankles from sport and the Veloster is still one of the only manual cars I can easily heel toe in (although I’m not that good at it).
Safety wise the Veloster has received a 5 star ANCAP rating and packed full of safety gear including 6 airbags (driver and front passenger, driver and front passenger side (thorax), full-length side curtains). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including: Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS). Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Hyundai Active Locking Operation (HALO), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
It gets points for standard fit rear parking sensors and gets bonus points for the rear view camera which makes it easy to reverse park.
The Veloster has been one of favourite cars for a long time and spending a week in the Street Edition only confirmed it more, not only is fun to drive on the open road and through some of my favourite twisty bits but it handled my Monday to Friday work commute excellently while returning decent fuel figures.
While the Veloster is not a perfect car and has been around for a couple of years so some people might find the dash aging a little I personally like it, it’s lack of a digtal speedo is the only thing I really don’t like about it oh that and the fact I can’t afford to buy one.
The Street Edition is based on the Veloster Turbo+ so it is packed full of standard features if the black exterior trim, brilliant Blue paint and blue accented interior wasn’t enough to convince you to buy.
Be warned though the Street Edition is only limited to 200 copies so if your interested I wouldn’t wait too long to visit your local Hyundai Dealer.
The Veloster was already one of favourite cars and the Street Edition just makes it just that much more special.
But don’t just take my words for granted if your looking for a coupe that has decent performance, drives and handles well then go take one for a test drive.
