MELBOURNE, May 10, 2017 – The eagerly awaited all-new Honda Civic hatch represents another significant step forward for Honda in the hotly contested small car segment.
With the 10th generation Honda Civic sedan laying the groundwork for bold styling, quality and performance, the Civic range is now enhanced with the arrival of the hatch.
Both the spacious Civic sedan and sporty Civic hatch feature distinctive styling cues, yet with a harmonious and contemporary design connection that clearly identifies both as bold new Civics.
Built on the same world-class platform as the sedan, the Honda Civic hatch offers an appealing combination of a fun-to-drive character, squat sporty styling, fuel efficiency and outstanding cargo space, courtesy of a wide-opening hatch and 60/40 fold down rear seats.
Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins, said the arrival of the Honda Civic hatch represented a step change for Honda in the small car segment in Australia.
“The development of the 10th generation Honda Civic was one of the most ambitious and comprehensive new model programs ever undertaken by Honda Motor Co. Ltd., with significant input from our local operation and dealer network” Mr. Collins, said.
“We knew when we launched the Honda Civic sedan that our customers were waiting for a complete rejuvenation of the Civic brand.
“With the arrival of the Honda Civic hatch, customers now have the choice of a sporty and dynamic hatch that is a perfect visual companion to the bold and successful Honda Civic sedan.”
Like the sedan, Honda Civic hatch customers have the choice of a proven, fuel efficient 1.8-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder engine or state-of-the-art 1.5-litre VTEC turbo engine, which delivers the performance of a mid-size car but with the fuel efficiency of a light car.
The Civic is Honda’s longest-running automotive nameplate and its largest-selling model globally. In Australia more than 330,000 Honda Civics have been sold since the first-generation Civic went on sale in 1972.
Over the course of nine generations, the Honda Civic has continuously evolved to meet changing customer needs around the world, regularly setting the bar for fuel-efficiency, driving performance and design innovation in an affordable small segment vehicle.
On a global stage, the Honda Civic is offered today in sedan, coupe and hatch body styles and sold in more than 170 markets around the world. As of 2016, it is produced in nine locations around the world.
The creation of the 10th generation Honda Civic required an unprecedented commitment of R&D resources and Honda engineering prowess.
Although the basic architecture and powertrain components that form the foundation of the 10th generation Honda Civic were developed in Japan, design and engineering teams, as well as sales and manufacturing operations around the world, including Australia, were deeply involved in the detailed analysis of customer needs.
The development team set itself a mission to realise a “dynamic rejuvenation” of the Honda Civic, with the aim of setting it apart “in a league of its own”. To this end, and from the early stage of the car’s platform development, engineers in Japan and the United States benchmarked the world’s best small cars, including luxury small class models, on the way to creating a new-generation platform.
The evaluation of the world’s best products involved extensive real-world testing with European luxury vehicles that ultimately served to define the all-new Honda Civic’s ambitious targets in ride, handling, steering and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance, as well as interior quality and overall refinement.
Achieving these lofty goals while ensuring the affordability of a small car, in terms of cost, fuel-efficiency and manufacturing, demanded new thinking and approaches to body construction, vehicle aerodynamics, powertrain and chassis development and design.
The result of these efforts is a completely re-imagined and reinvented Honda Civic sedan and hatch. The Honda Civic is truly the sportiest Civic ever and a benchmark for the small car segment in terms of space, fuel efficiency, safety features, interior quality and driving performance.
“The new Honda Civic sedan has been acclaimed for its ride, steering and quality and the Civic hatch lifts the bar with a roomy cargo area, innovative adjustable luggage cover and the expected levels of Honda thoroughness when it comes to engineering, refinement and quality,” Mr. Collins said.
“Our target is to win the hearts and minds of private buyers in Australia with the all-new Honda Civic, and the sedan has certainly done that, achieving well over 20 per cent segment share since launch.
“So we expect private customers will put the new Honda Civic hatch on their shopping list as well, as it’s an equally strong offering.”
The all-new Honda Civic hatch is now on sale at Honda dealerships around Australia.
