Mitsubishi Releases 2020 Triton
More capability for mid-spec Triton helps drivers go further off-road – and take on their toughest jobs.
KEY SPEC CHANGES:
- Rear diff lock now available on all GLS and GLX+ models
- Rear air circulator now available in double cab GLX+
- Keyless / one-touch start is now available in all GLS models
Today Mitsubishi released its 2020 Triton, this year focusing on putting more power and capability behind the mid-range models that have proven most popular with consumers and fleets, and changing the spec to improve comfort and performance.
Improved capability for mid-spec 4WD models
- Previously reserved for the GLS Premium, from 2020 a rear diff lock is now available on GLX+, GLS and GLS Premium models.
- The GLX+ model is equipped with Easy-Select 4WD allowing easy switching between 2WD and 4WD modes and offers 2H, 4H and 4L transfer case settings.
- Whereas GLS and GLS Premium models are equipped with Super-Select 4WD-II offers 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time 4WD), 4HLc (lock up) and 4LLc (lock up in low gear) modes to deliver optimum traction and handling characteristics for all surfaces.
- 4WD models with 18-inch wheels have a ground clearance of 220 mm. Performance over poor surfaces is helped by improved an approach angle of up to 31°, departure angle of 23° and ramp break over angle of 25°. The Double Cab delivers excellent all-terrain performance on the kind of rough roads utes must often negotiate.
Mitsubishi Motors Deputy Director for Marketing and Operation, Derek McIlroy said: “We’re making changes to our functionality to be able to deliver Australian customers what they’re looking for. Australia is a key market for Triton development, and we’re consistently listening to ute buyers and looking for new ways to add the features they want to our line-up.”
Increased comfort and convenience features
The GLX+ also gains an air circulator, to increase cabin comfort quicker.
The GLS also gains a keyless operation system, with smart key and one-touch start.
“The decision to extend these features beyond the GLS Premium was made in response to customer feedback; they have been very popular,” said Owen Thomson, senior manager for product strategy.

Notes on Mitsubishi’s 4WD technologies
- Rear differential lock
Even when one rear wheel loses contact with the ground on very poor roads, the driver can lock the rear differential for more positive transmission of drive to the road surface. Available on 4WD models, the rear differential lock gives the vehicle outstanding self-extraction capability from mud or snow.
- Super Select-II
The Triton uses Super Select-II with its electronic actuator that facilitates switching between drive modes and a rear-bias centre differential that splits F/R drive torque 40:60.
The system offers four modes:
- 2H (rear wheel drive) for dry asphalt surfaces reduces friction in the drivetrain to improve fuel consumption;
- 4H for surfaced and unsurfaced roads can handle the widest range of conditions, including rain drenched and snow covered surfaces;
- 4HLc for snow covered roads or sand; locks the centre differential to deliver optimum performance on low-grip surfaces;
- 4LLc for rock or mud engages a reduction ratio gear and locks the centre differential to feed maximum drive to all four wheels. The use of lower gear ratios in 4LLc mode gives improved all-terrain performance.
- Easy Select 4WD
The Triton GLX and GLX+ retain Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD which allows the driver to switch simply between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. There are three transfer case settings – 2H, 4H and 4L – and the driver can switch between 2H and 4H on the fly at speeds under 100 km/h.
The addition of the rear differential lock, means that vehicles utilizing Easy Select 4WD can engage the rear differential lock in both 4H and 4L.
Both 6A/T and 6M/T Super Select 4WD-II models use an Off-road Mode selector offering the choice of specific GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND and ROCK (only in 4LLc) drive modes. Using integrated control of engine power, automatic transmission and braking depends on Active Stability & Traction Control, the system regulates the amount of wheel slip to maximize all-terrain performance and self-extraction capability from poor road conditions.
This mode combines optimum acceleration and stability over unsurfaced roads where small stones or dirt can cause wheel slip.
- MUD / SNOW
This mode regulates wheel slip to avoid getting stuck and to maintain directional stability when moving off. Once the vehicle is moving steadily, the system allows some slip and reduces the degree of traction control (TCL*1) to reduce any sense of stalling. If the system detects that the vehicle is getting stuck in mud or snow, it controls engine power control to improve its self-extraction capability.
In this mode, when the vehicle moves off the system reduces wheel slip to avoid getting stuck and, by initiating a limited slip differential effect, improves its self-extraction capability. Once the vehicle is moving steadily, the system allows some slip and reduces the degree of TCL*1/ASC*2 system control to reduce any feeling of stalling. On A/T models, the transmission switches to shift timing best-suited to SAND mode and maintains high torque feed by selecting the appropriate gear.
2：Active Stability Control
When the system detects that diagonally opposite wheels do not have sufficient contact with the ground, or to improve traction and stability when going uphill, the system reduces any loss of drive by suppressing wheel slip and acting as a limited slip differential. On A/T models, the transmission switches to shift timing best-suited to ROCK mode and maintains high drive torque feed by selecting the appropriate gear.
